Building G.R.I.T. in the Age of AI: A Message for Every Teacher in the Room
AI is not the enemy of great teaching. But it will expose the teachers who stopped growing. Here's how to use it to deepen your G.R.I.T. — Great Resilience In Time — not diminish it.

I want to talk to you: not to the role, not to the title, not to the data point you represent on a district dashboard. I want to talk to you, the person who got into this work because you believed something no standardized test has ever captured: that every child deserves a teacher who sees them.
That belief is G.R.I.T. And right now, that belief is being tested in a brand new way; not by budget cuts or behavior challenges or impossible standards (though those are real). It is being tested by artificial intelligence.
Let me say the quiet part out loud: AI is not coming for your job. But AI — used without intention, without fidelity, without G.R.I.T. — could come for the best parts of your teaching.
That is what this post is about. Not a tech tutorial. Not a list of apps. A real conversation about who you are as an educator, what G.R.I.T. actually demands of you, and how to walk into an AI-powered classroom and still be the most important thing in it.
WHAT G.R.I.T. ACTUALLY MEANS
G.R.I.T. Was Never About Toughness. It Was Always About Purpose.
Before we talk about AI, let's get grounded. G.R.I.T. is not gritting your teeth and pushing through. It is not martyrdom dressed up in motivational language. It is a framework for sustainable, purposeful growth — for students and educators.
G — Great: Committing to greatness in your craft, your classroom, and your calling every single day.
R — Resilience: The ability to absorb difficulty and keep moving — without losing yourself in the process.
I — In: Staying fully in it — present, engaged, and invested in every child in that room.
T — Time: Showing up with greatness and resilience over time — not just on good days, but every day.
Great Resilience In Time. Read that again. G.R.I.T. is not a moment — it is a practice. It is who you choose to be, consistently, over the long arc of a career dedicated to children.
Now ask yourself: where does AI fit into that? Everywhere — and nowhere. AI can help you act on your G.R.I.T. with less friction. But AI cannot give you G.R.I.T., and it cannot replace the moments when your G.R.I.T. is the only thing standing between a student and giving up on themselves.
"The question was never 'can AI teach?' The question is: can you use AI and still be fully present for the child in front of you?"

THE REAL TALK: WHAT AI WILL AND WON'T DO FOR YOUR CLASSROOM
I have been in enough schools to know that the AI conversation among teachers falls into two camps: the ones who think AI is going to revolutionize everything, and the ones who think it is a fancy autocomplete that is going to make students stop thinking. Both camps are partially right. Both camps are missing the point.
Here is what AI is genuinely good at in an education context:
AI is good at generating options — versions of a problem, ways to explain a concept, types of feedback language. It is good at handling the administrative and logistical tasks that eat your Sunday nights. It is good at being patient, repeating itself without frustration, and providing immediate low-stakes practice for students who need it.
Here is what AI cannot do, no matter how good it gets:
It cannot notice that a student was quiet today in a way that felt different from their usual quiet. It cannot remember the conversation you had with a child's parent three months ago that changes how you read that child's behavior. It cannot feel the room shift when a breakthrough is about to happen, and lean into it. It cannot be the adult that a student runs to after something goes wrong at home. It cannot mean something to a child.
That is your job. That will always be your job. AI is the tool. You are the teacher.
7 WAYS TO USE AI THAT ACTUALLY STRENGTHEN G.R.I.T.
These are not tricks. These are intentional practices that use AI as a means toward the G.R.I.T. outcomes you are already working toward. Start with one. Use it for two weeks. Then come back for another.
1. Use AI to Differentiate Without Burning Out
Showing up with greatness over time — that is the T in G.R.I.T. But you cannot do that if you are running on empty. Before a unit, ask AI to generate three versions of your key problems: scaffolded, on-level, and extended. You curate. You assign. You stay present for the conversations that follow — which are where the real learning happens.
2. Let AI Handle the Explainer; You Handle the Why
When a student doesn't understand a concept, AI can generate three or four alternate explanations instantly — visual, narrative, procedural, real-world. Give them the one that fits. Then sit beside them and ask: "What made that click for you?" That reflection is where G.R.I.T. gets built. The AI did the logistics. You did the teaching.
3. Build a Mistake Culture Faster with AI Practice Tools
One of the hardest things in math class is getting students to attempt problems they might get wrong. AI-powered practice tools — used as low-stakes, no-grade practice — let students fail privately, try again, and build the habit of resilience before it has to happen publicly. You are cultivating Great Resilience In Time, one attempt at a time.
4. Reclaim Your Time for the Relationships That Matter
Every minute AI saves you — on generating quizzes, writing rubrics, drafting newsletters home — is a minute you can spend in actual relationship with a student. Being fully present, consistently, over time is what G.R.I.T. looks like in practice. AI is not stealing your presence; it is funding it. Use those recovered minutes on purpose.
5. Use AI to Help Students Set and Track Their Own Goals
G.R.I.T. is not taught by lecture — it is built over time through the practice of setting a goal, working toward it, reflecting on the gap, and trying again. Use AI tools to help students create personalized learning goals, track progress, and generate their own self-reflection prompts. You facilitate. They own it.
6. Create Real-World Math Contexts That Reflect Your Students
Representation in math problems matters more than most curricula acknowledge. Ask AI to embed your standards in contexts your specific students recognize and care about — their neighborhoods, their interests, their heroes. When students see themselves in the math, engagement changes. That is not a trick. That is greatness.
7. Use AI to Sharpen Your Feedback — Not Replace It
The most powerful thing a teacher can give a student is specific, growth-oriented feedback. AI can help you draft feedback language when you are staring at the 47th paper at 9 PM and the words have stopped coming. You bring the knowledge of the child. AI helps you find the language. Then you sign your name to it — because it came from you.
G.R.I.T. REFLECTION: QUESTIONS FOR THIS WEEK
Sit with these before your next planning session:
- Where in your teaching are you spending energy on logistics that AI could handle — freeing you for the human work?
- Which of your students needs more of you right now, and what is standing in the way of that?
- What does showing up with greatness and resilience over time actually look like in your classroom this month?
- Where have you avoided a new tool because it felt risky? Is that avoidance protecting you, or limiting you?
YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY IN THAT CLASSROOM
I have been in classrooms across this country. I have seen what transforms a student's relationship with learning and with themselves. It is never the platform. It is never the app. It is always, always the teacher who decided that this child was worth their full attention and best effort today.
G.R.I.T. in the age of AI means this: you do not have to choose between being a modern educator and being a deeply human one. You can use every tool available to you and still be the irreplaceable presence in that room.
Use AI with intention. Use it with fidelity. Use it in service of the students who need you. Not as a substitute for showing up — but as a force multiplier for when you do.
That is Great Resilience In Time. That has always been G.R.I.T.
Now go teach. The world needs exactly what you have.
With love and G.R.I.T.,
